where is the oil filter located if there is one a place says they have one we bought it and cant find itOn an 82 xr 500 r wher is the oil filter?
The 1982 XR500R doesn't have on oil filter.


It has an oil screen, which rarely needs to be cleaned.


Clean it when any engine work is done - it's inside of the right side crankcase cover (clutch cover).

Well if a bike has one it is usually located in one of 3 places-at the rear of the engine -a screw on type filter will be located here, at the front of the engine-a screw on type filter can be located here also. Internal filters are located in one of 2 places-under the engine toward in the center, toward the rear of the engine, or under the right side lower engine cover-these usually have a small seperate section of the engine cover that is held on by 3 or 4 bolts. I am betting that yours is located internally under the engine.
guardrailjim is spot on ... the '82 XR500 only had a oil filter screen...





the '83 XR500 was the first year to have a paper cartridge filter that was to be replaced with every oil change...
I had an 84 500 and it seems like it was on the right hand side at the front of the side cover. It'll hat three bolts and is about a 1.5 inch cover. It's a cartridge style not a spin on.
I agree with Janice, I think that one is internal, you should go and buy one first, then you will know the shape and size of it. Then look for the cover plate that holds it in %26amp; in place.
